1. Does it work in the rain?
Our new LightMode S Kits are water resistant.
Our first generation LightMode Kits are not water resistant. It's okay if you get caught in the rain, simply keep the device powered off and let it dry completely before turning it on.
2. Is it legal?
Every state/province has its own legislation when it comes to motor vehicles. The state of California does not consider the vehicle operator as part of the vehicle, so the laws that govern the lighting of a motor vehicle do not apply, and therefore this is legal there. In BC, Canada, it is considered illegal, but we have ridden with it on while passing countless police officers and have not been pulled over for it.
Phone your local police department if you would like peace of mind before ordering. We are not responsible for any encounters you may come across with your local authorities.
3. What's the difference between the Electron Kit and the Proton Kit?
The Electron Kit has 3 meters of EL wire and 50 cm of EL tape. The Proton Kit has 4.5 meters of EL wire, no EL tape, but 2 extra colors to choose from. The Proton Kit also has approximately one more hour of battery life compared to the Electron Kit and was designed as an option for helmets with lots of edges/corners/vents that make mounting EL tape difficult.

Please note, we are not responsible for any duty/taxes that you incur upon receiving your shipment. US customers will not need to pay duty or taxes. Canadian customers will only need to pay taxes. Everyone else may be subject to duty, taxes, and/or brokerage fees.

5. Is the high pitched hum that comes from the controller normal?
Non-technical answer: Yes, but it is too quiet to hear while riding.
Technical answer: The circuit runs on high frequency alternating current which causes harmonic vibrations in the electrical system. To us, it sounds like a quiet high pitched buzzing sound and it is completely normal.
6. How do I order?
7. Do you provide the helmet?
We only offer two LightMode Kits: the Electron Kit and the Proton Kit. LightMode has grown quickly since our days on Kickstarter and making each helmet by hand is too time consuming. Besides, our friends… ahem, costumers, have proven to be more creative than we are, as their numerous LightMode helmet postings on Instagram prove. We will be focusing on developing our kits further.
8. How long do the batteries last?
Two, fully charged, NiMH rechargeable AA batteries can illuminate a helmet for 10-13 hours in constant mode, and much longer in the blinking modes. Standard AA alkaline batteries can also be used. Different AA batteries will sustain charge for different lengths of time. Use NiMh rechargeables for the best results.
9. When can I expect my order to arrive?
USA orders: 3 - 4 business days from shipping date. Faster options are available.
Canada orders: 2 - 7 business days from shipping date. The closer the customer is to the Pacific Coast, the faster the item will be delivered. Faster options are available.
Everywhere else: 6 - 10 business days from shipping date. Faster options are available. Sometimes the destination country's Customs can hold parcels for weeks and, in rare cases, months. It is strongly recommended you choose a shipping option that is tracked from start to finish if you don't trust your Customs, or Postal Services.
10. Is the LightMode Kit a permanent modification?
Yes, and for good reason. We opted for a more secure attachment method, over a more convenient one, to ensure the EL components won't fly off when travelling at high speeds.
11. Are the kits compatible with modular helmets?
Yes, just make sure to leave enough clearance for the chin piece when it flips up and to be mindful where to glue things down near the joint. It's best to test out your design with the PVC stickers provided in our LightMode Kits before gluing everything down.
12. I have not received a shipment e-mail notification. Should I be worried?
Sometimes, for some reason, our automated email notification system cannot make it through your e-mail's filters. We can confidently say, though, that 99% of those who contacted us about their order received their shipment within the estimated shipping time.
13. WILL I HAVE TO PAY DUTY/TAXES UPON DELIVERY?
Normally, duty and tax rates are set by your government, and your post office is required to collect it upon receipt of an item. It's standard practice worldwide, although sometimes customs offices do not charge duties/taxes for a variety of reasons.
For US orders: no duty or taxes.
For Canadian orders: only taxes which you will pay while submitting you order.
14. What is your return policy?
If you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, you may return your order in original packaging, and in new and working condition, within 30 days from your date of purchase. To speed up processing of your refund you should place a note with your Order Number in the return box. There is a 15% restocking fee for all returns. Shipping costs are non-refundable.
